It’s been a whirlwind week here: I started the week in Florida with a few of my favorite blogging buddies, then came home for Bee’s 4th birthday (when did he get so big?!), my husband flew out on an unexpected business trip AND we’ve been under a ‘boil water’ advisory all week so no dishes, laundry, cooking, drinking, bathing, etc. can be done until it’s lifted. From paradise to boiled water, there’s never a dull moment in the Lemonade House!
Despite the chaos, I’m counting blessings and switching gears today to let you know about a Lemonade Warrior named Alex Scott. You can’t mention the word ‘lemonade’ in the Philly area without thinking about Alex. She’s the brave little girl who literally fought her whole life to raise awareness for childhood cancer after being diagnosed with neuroblastoma at age 1. After discussing with her mom how to help other sick children, she decided to hold a lemonade stand and give the proceeds to fund cancer research. Her first lemonade stand raised $2000. When she passed away at the age of 8, Alex and her family had raised over $1 million dollars toward cancer research.
Talk about incredible.
Just weeks before she passed away, she appeared on the Today Show to spread her message (grab your tissues if you watch the video). It was that important to her, to be there despite not feeling well. You can see her will and determination to spread her message and help others. To date, Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation has raised over $75 million for cancer research. It’s truly amazing what one girl and a homegrown idea can accomplish.
I’m honored today to spread the word about Alex, and encourage you to sign up to host your own stand and further the mission Alex started.
You can hold your own stand any time of the year, but also on National Lemonade Days (June 6-8 2014). Simply register your lemonade stand here (please do it before May 28th), and ALSF will send you a box full of goodies for your stand such as signs, balloons, freebies, coupons, and more!
Here’s what arrived in our lemonade stand kit:
Thank you, dear Alex, for being an inspiration to so many and a hero for all.
Who’s up for some lemonade? Let’s fight cancer one cup at a time!
