The BEST Advice I Ever Got #motherhood #quotes www.makinglemonadeblog.com

It's been a frustrating winter to say the least. This winter is providing our eighth school snow delay, on top of ten snow cancellation days. Which is impressive, when you realize my kids are only in school together 3 mornings a week. For someone who relies on those meager hours to squeeze in a full week's worth of work, it's anxiety inducing to say the least. Let's do the math: 11 snow days plus 7 school delays equals A WHOLE LOTTA VODKA in my coffee cup at 10am. I kid, I kid. (not … [Read more...]

Pet Adoption and Allergies

Meet Charlie. ... or Lunar, or Toby, or Hoagie, depending on who you ask. He's the newest love of my life. I swear he called me to him.  We typically visit Petsmart about once every two weeks as an "activity"-- we watch the available cats for adoption, smile as the doggies get haircuts, giggle at the antics of the puppies in Doggy Daycare, and pick up a treat for a favorite dog of ours. However, a few weeks ago I got that feeling. The feeling I had to visit Petsmart. That we needed … [Read more...]

One Wild and Precious Life Quote

A friend and I had lunch a few days ago and chatted about our one word for the year.  Last year I knew what my word would be, blogged about it, and definitely tried to live it all year long.  This year, I had not even given a thought about my word and as my friend coerced me to share it over coffee that day, a word popped into my head and I blurted out: "my word for 2014 is SLEEP!" Sleep is no joke to me.  I attempt to only blog when my kids aren't around, and since I work 40+ hours a week … [Read more...]

Christmas Ideas and Wrap-Up

Wishing you a {slightly belated} Merry Christmas and an early Happy New Year! {cards from Pear Tree Greetings} Everything is belated this week. I just put our Christmas cards in the mail today.  Such is life, right? Prior to Christmas, the temps reached mid-60s so we made our annual trek into the city.  The massive screen at the Comcast Center dazzled.  Note that's just half the screen in this photo. {@MakingLemonade on Instagram} After checking out the outdoor market, we settled in … [Read more...]

Pajamas, Breakage, and Breakdowns

I had a mini-breakdown on Sunday.  Like a theoretical breakdown where my mind is racing and I’m about to whirl around and snap at the next person who sings ‘poopy poopoo pants’ for the 7,956 time, but didn’t go through the whole screaming/crying/laying like a blob on the floor sobbing part.  I was getting worked up as visions of ‘to-do’ lists danced in my head while also laying halfway in our dark crawl space praying a spider doesn’t crawl over my hand.  And I was mad.  I was … [Read more...]

Rapunzel Tangled Craft Ideas and party decor

There's been a frenzy of activity around these parts over the past week. Not only did we haul out our basket of this: and hang this: and stick up some of these: and {awkwardly} eat LOTS of these: while eagerly awaiting the arrival of cousins and aunts and Yiayias and Grampies who journeyed from Boston for the week: but I've been sucked into reading another one of these: and we've also been painting these: and braiding this: gluing a few of these: and I hung 18 of … [Read more...]

Outer Banks & Cape Hatteras vacation

I'm grateful I found my mantra the very first day we arrived in the Outer Banks. I'm grateful for sleepy heads on our nine hour drive.  And mismatched pajamas, but that's a story for another day. I'm grateful for this view on the GPS. I'm grateful he's telling her what's what-- -- and they are still best friends. I'm grateful this lighthouse has stood steady as a sentinel in my life for the past decade.  I'm grateful it still brings me to tears when I see it each … [Read more...]

Saying Goodbye to a Family Pet

I feel so blessed my friend Kelly (you've met her before here and here) is sharing with us today about her dog-turned-family-member, Arnie.  Making Lemonade is a place where we try our very best to make lemonade out of life's sour circumstances, but also stay realistic and allow ourselves to feel down when things are hard.  I know you'll give Kelly lots of love, virtual hugs, and perhaps a sloppy dog kiss or two.   Our Arnie. The night before we first picked you up when you were a … [Read more...]

Blogging, From a Non-Blogger’s Perspective

non-blogger2

My friend Kelly is one of the funniest people I've had the pleasure of knowing, and her perspective on blogging as a non-blogger is always eye-opening and enlightening for me.  Our phone conversations typically end with riotous peals of laughter, and she's my pillar of strength when I'm at wits end with the chaos of two kids, working from home, and trying not to go nuts.  When she asked if she could publish this, I wanted to let her share her insight with the caveat that you all know I feel … [Read more...]

Hometalk is shining the Bloglight on us today, friends!  That's right, Hometalk picked Making Lemonade to feature this week and I'm all giddy and fangirl over it.  Miriam (the community director over on Hometalk) sent some questions to get me dishing about my blogging journey and all things lemonade.  So here it is-- the good, the hard, and the sparkly (huh?  read on). Wait, what?  Some of you don't know about Hometalk yet?  I'm a newbie on there myself, so I'm hoping you'll hold my … [Read more...]

On Failure: Rodarte Inspired Wall Art

Tomorrow I'll be joining a few friends in a fun collaboration centered around one theme: Pantone's 2013 Color of the Year, Emerald.  When we planned the collaboration, I had grand plans for a fantastic DIY art piece for our master bedroom.  It was inspired by the Starbucks gift card I got for my BFF, which happened to be designed by the fashion house Rodarte: Don't the colors remind you of my signature style board?  Neutrals with a pop of fresh green.  Well, I planned to incorporate … [Read more...]

Creating a Home You Love: Style Board

MakingLemonadeStyle

You've probably noticed that over the past few months I've been exploring the topic of creating a home you love that also fits your family's needs.  With a little creativity, those two ideas really can go hand in hand.  That thought has been percolating in my brain for awhile, and I first started to flesh out the idea of designing for the seasons of your life in a guest post on Fieldstone Hill. Darlene recently wrote a post about how to create a signature style board.  This lady knows her … [Read more...]

Word of the Year 2013

Wordoftheyear_know

Over the past few years, it's become popular to choose a 'word of the year' as opposed to writing individual resolutions.  Traditional New Year's resolutions, while good, can be clunky and hard to remember.  For the past few years, I created a few general goals each January and then broke those down into tasks that would help me attain them-- that's the 'do-it' list you can see in my sidebar. That's been a great way to challenge myself, but focusing on a 'word of the year' simplifies … [Read more...]

I can't stop hugging my kids. I can't stop embracing them in gigantic hugs and snuggling them until they wriggle free. I can't stop kissing those soft cheeks, silky hair, and even their elbows and toes. {source: PhotoExplorer) When I heard the news on Friday, I reacted first as a mom.  Then as a teacher, knowing how those heroes protected their babies and did what any teacher would do to protect their students, bless those angels.   And lastly I reacted as a human being, wondering … [Read more...]

Before I started blogging, I read a few articles on 'How to Start a Blog.'  Every one of them recommended that if you were serious about blogging you should use the Wordpress platform.  The problem with Wordpress is it costs money because you need to pay for hosting, whereas using Blogger is free.Free is good.  In fact, the best things in life are often free.  I started my blog on Blogger, and pretty happily continued using it for over 3 years now.Unfortunately, over the past year I've … [Read more...]

Hey Everyone!  Posting was sporadic around here over the past week because we took a last minute trip to a certain special place. Can you guess where?Oh yes, we made the trek to Disney World.  It was our first time visiting with kids (and, whew, flying with kids!) and quite truthfully I was terrified.  But all the planning and prepping paid off, and I have to say it was a wonderful-- dare I say magical? -- trip. This is sorta how I feel today. My husband snapped that pic after our last day in … [Read more...]

When we brought Abby home from the hospital 2 months after she was born, there were certain things I knew for sure.I knew we were incredibly lucky to have the honor of bringing her home-- what a miracle she survived!-- and I'd be thankful for that every single day of my life.I knew the road would be hard, that medical interventions for an infant were tough, she had a difficult journey ahead but we'd be by her side no matter what.I knew I'd have to shed self-doubt, and decide not to give a darn … [Read more...]
