The Knife Block to End All Knife Blocks*

* How’s THAT for a dramatic title?

EDITED TO ADD: It’s been over two years since I wrote this post, so what’s the verdict on the knife block after years of use? I LOVE IT! Still works great with NO problems. Keep reading for why I love it so much…

Remember back in January when I was naively full of hope for organizing my home with the 52 Week Home Organization Challenge?  I know several of you were doing the challenge as well, and probably still are… unlike me, the slacker.  I should have known 52 weeks was a bit long for me to focus.

When I left off, I had organized my kitchen countertops and was gung-ho on following the week-by-week plan for organizing my home and kitchen.  One of the issues I had was knife storage– I had two knife blocks, and neither fit my knives very well.  My sister suggested getting one knife block with lots of slots, so I put it on my “to-find” list.  That’s when the problem emerged of finding a knife block with slots that fit the various sized knives in my drawers, and also one with the perfect number of slots for my actual knives.  I know, I know… first world problems.  Life is tough.  😉

Looking at that photo, I realize one thing: I do NOT miss those green laminate countertops!  I’m so in love with the new black granite ones I forgot how terrible the old ones were.  Anyways.

Fast forward a few months, and I found myself browsing knife blocks at Bed, Bath, and Beyond when I found one that’s unique.  It’s called Kapoosh, and instead of slots for each knife it has tiny rods that snuggle your knives so you can stick them wherever you want, any size, almost any quantity.  Elated {because I’m weird like that}, I bought it and brought it home to test it out.

So, what’s the verdict?  LOVE.  I love it!  Or else I probably wouldn’t be telling you about it.  The online reviews are mixed so I’ll tell you the good, the bad, and any ugly I can find:

The Good:

  • It fits all my knives.  I have 6 steak knives, a paring knife, a good chef’s knife, and a few others.  They all fit, unlike a traditional block that only allows the knives that will fit in those specially sized slots.
  • It’s easy to keep clean.  You’ll need to wash the rods every so often, but they come out in one solid unit attached at the bottom so there’s no mess.  The fact the rods are dishwasher safe is HUGE in my book.
  • It saves counter space by corralling all those knives into one compact spot.  No storing them in drawers the kids can reach, or on a magnet strip– which is such a great concept, but I don’t have the wall space for it.
  • It looks cool, right?

The Bad:

  • There is a limit to the number of knives you can add, because it does start to become tight in there.  Apparently you can take out a rod or two in order to create more space, but I haven’t reached that point yet.  I currently have ten in there and they fit fine.

The Ugly:

  • It says little bits of the {food safe} rods may break off if sliced by the blades, but they aren’t harmful and need only to be quickly rinsed off.  I haven’t actually had this happen yet, so it’s not an issue for me… plus, I usually rinse my knives before I use them anyways.

I realize not everyone is in the market for a new knife block, or even has an opinion on knife blocks (whaaaaaat?), but when I find something unique I like to share.  So what do you think– is the Kapoosh SO HOT or SO NOT?
