Ever feel as if your bathrooms smell ‘less than fresh?’ There’s a few reasons this might happen, and I have several tricks that will get rid of that issue once and for all. PROBLEM: How do I get rid of that ‘boy bathroom’ smell?

It’s amazing what you learn from being around your girlfriends for an hour with margaritas in hand. One of the best tips I’ve ever gotten was in such a case, when a ‘boy mom’ friend lamented how stinky her bathrooms had gotten no matter how much she cleaned the toilet and floors. Another mom of (several) boys chimed in with this brilliant tip: wash the walls!

That’s right. THE WALLS. You might think you’re getting everything up when you clean the floor and grout, but if you have a household of boys it’s amazing what they might mark as their territory (to put it kindly). When washing the floors, give the surrounding walls a wash too and that stink will disappear!

PROBLEM: My bathroom still smells. Why?

Well, I can’t diagnose your problem with certainty but I can share a situation in our house and how we fixed it. For example, the good news is my kids are super conscientious and, in order to not wake anyone up, when they use the bathroom in the middle of the night they don’t flush. The bad news is that in the middle of the night THEY DON’T FLUSH. That leads to a lovely sight in the morning. More, it contributes to growth in our toilet. To fix this, I used 2000 Flushes Automatic Toilet Bowl Cleaner to clean when I can’t (ie, middle of the night).

The tablets sit in the tank and not only do they clean with every flush and get rid of bacteria in the tank, they don’t hurt the toilet fixtures and plumbing when used as directed. Even if you don’t have a non-flusher, there may be odors coming from the tank and this product will clear them right up.

PROBLEM: I can’t figure out how to store my toilet brush– it’s soaking wet!

I shared this in a post a few weeks ago, but it bears repeating: let it drip dry between the rim and the seat! This way, you won’t put it away wet which would lead to stagnant water in your toilet brush holder.

PROBLEM: I’ve gotten rid of the odors. How do I make the room extra smell amazing?

Easy– add your favorite essential oils to a DIY reed diffuser and turn the reeds around every few days. You won’t need to cover up odors if you use the tips above, but it doesn’t hurt to go the extra mile and make the room smell amazing.
