7+ Indoor Uses for Outdoor Rugs

Close your eyes and picture an outdoor rug.  What do you see?  Bright green astroturf, or perhaps a drenched and stained sisal?

Not anymore.  Outdoor rugs have come a long way, baby!

In fact, now they are so gorgeous it’s not uncommon to use them indoors.  When you think about it, that’s a perfect application for outdoor rugs– especially in high-traffic areas, areas prone to spillage, or anywhere that might see moisture.  You know what else make them fabulous?

The price.  It must be the material, because the price on outdoor rugs can’t be beat.  Where else can you find a stylish 5X8 rug for just $99?  My love affair with them started on the deck.  Of all the things we added out there, the rugs were what truly brought it to life.

Then I found an outdoor beauty at HomeGoods.  After thinking it through for about a minute, I bought it.  It’s perfectly at home in my dining room, and I don’t have to worry about stains because I can spot clean as needed.  After I brought it home I realized it’s twin had been on my ‘For the Home’ pinboard for ages.  Love it when a plan comes together!   mwahahahahaha….

Are there any cons to outdoor rugs?  It depends on the rug.  Some have a rougher feel due to the material, so if you’re shopping for them in store be sure to give it a touch test.  The outdoor rug in my dining room feels the same as my indoor rugs, so it does vary.

Here are 7+ favorite uses for outdoor rugs; rooms just begging for something beautiful yet durable.

(note: all rugs below can be found in the Durable Designs sale today at One Kings Lane— more info on that at the bottom of the post)

1.  Kitchen

A kitchen rug softens the hardness of floor and offers a pop of color.  Having a moisture-friendly rug in the kitchen is a definite bonus!  I love the Shaw rug that’s in my kitchen now (seen in the background of this photo), but it’s too small for the space so I’m on the lookout for something similar but larger.

I’m going to order one of the following; any votes for your favorite?

2.  Bathroom

Again, outdoor rugs deal well with moisture and the bathroom certainly is a place you’ll find it.  How about one of these beauties, in a 2X3 size?

3.  Kids’ Rooms

Let’s not go into detail over what might make an outdoor rug perfect for a kids room; suffice it to say, they clean up nicely with a hose if it comes to that.  😉  Here’s two I love for kids’ spaces:

4.  Basements

After our basement flooding experience this fall, we WILL be getting an outdoor rug for that space.  There’s always a chance the basement will be flooded again, and after ripping out carpet I know an outdoor rug is the perfect solution.  These neutrals would work well in a basement space:

Most dirt is collected at your home’s entryway.  Shoes, boots, pets, and leaves get caught at the area closest to your door.  I currently have a beautiful Dash and Albert runner in our entryway, but despite frequent vacuuming it’s pretty dirty.  It would be nice to have a weather-resistant rug that I could hose off if needed.

6 and 7:  Laundry Room and Dining Room

Both deal with potential messes.  A happy rug in either spot that handles spills is a plus!  A few bold choices perfect for those spaces:

8.  Decks and Patios

What?  Using an outdoor rug outdoors?  Stranger things have happened.  It’s my strong assertion that the right outdoor rug can create a totally livable outdoor space.  We spend May-October on our deck, and thanks to our outdoor rugs we can go shoeless.  And summers are all about being shoeless.

Here’s the exact rug under our deck table, available today at One Kings Lane:
