7 Popular Yard Sale Items That Sell Like Crazy!

We are in MAJOR cleaning mode around here and gearing up for our bi-annual yard sale. Looking over the (massive) garage sale pile it occurred to me there’s several popular items that almost always sell quickly. These make great items to advertise in your online garage sale ads as well as strategically place to attract buyers to your sale.  They also do really well in the online yard sale groups that have popped up all over Facebook. Here’s 7 popular yard sale items that seem to sell like hotcakes! Wait– do hotcakes sell well? Okay, insert the name of whatever desirable item is hot at the moment, ’cause these will sell like that!

Lawn Equipment  & Tools

As long as you’re honest with how well a piece of lawn equipment works, it usually sells quickly! Trimmers, blowers and lawn mowers are attractive for new homeowners, those who need parts, and second-hand dealers. Every time we have a piece of lawn equipment it sells, no matter what the condition. Tools are another hot item– collectors like old ones, and many people just can’t resist having a new-to-them tool ‘just in case’.

Kids’ Outdoor Toys

You know those large plastic things that cost a fortune new? These get snapped up quickly at yard sales, especially when in good condition! I resold a climber I’d bought at a consignment sale FOR THE SAME AMOUNT I ORIGINALLY PAID. Plastic slides, basketball hoops, Cozy Coups, turtle sandboxes, playhouses, water tables, etc.– place them near the front of your sale, they’ll stop traffic!

Outdoor Furniture

This is another pricey item that stops traffic, so place them near the street. Chaises, outdoor furniture, lawn chairs in good condition, etc. are super popular. Spiff them up with a good washing first and I bet they’ll sell quickly!

Costume Jewelry

I had lots of costume jewelry from my days of selling vintage items in a booth at an antique store, most of which I picked up for pennies. Each time I get ready for a garage sale I seem to dig out more and also clean out my own jewelry collection. I price them between $1- $3 and put them at the cashier’s table. People can’t resist adding a few pieces as they check out!

Kids’ Clothing

Advertise this along with approximate sizes and expect people to get there EARLY! I buy name brand clothing for next to nothing (check out my ‘how to get brand name kids’ clothes for CHEAP’ strategy) and then turn around the resell them after they are outgrown.  I sell most of it for $2 each and group by size and gender to make it easy, unless there’s a special piece or one with tags still attached (those I hang on a wardrobe rack). I easily make several hundred by only selling clothes in great condition and advertising the sizes and brand names in my yard sale’s Craig’s List ad!

Name Brand Clothing

I have little tolerance for clothes that I don’t love or fit well any more, and yard sales CAN be a good place to sell them. I say *can*, because traditionally clothing doesn’t sell well at yard sales. HOWEVER. I advertise the specific name brands in my Craig’s List ad (Ann Taylor, LOFT, J.Crew, Banana Republic, etc) and sell them for a song (between $3-$5). I don’t recoup all of my original investment, but it’s better than nothing! Plus, it quickly adds up to equal enough to buy a few new outfits that I DO love after the yard sale is over. 😉 TIP: for the really good stuff, I sell it to Clothes Mentor and they pay much better.

Cold Drinks

People LOVE an impulse buy, so take advantage of a hot day and stock a cooler with ice cold drinks! I get 12 packs cheap and then sell the cans or water bottles for $1. Then I give that money to charity. People love it, so it makes for happier customers and money for charity to boot.
