Who’s ready for a touch of spring? Nothing says spring like flowers, so  I’m sharing how to decorate terra cotta flower pots three ways (in under 10 minutes each, for those of you busy people who think you don’t have time to make things). These pots range from sweet to modern to shabby chic; simply choose your favorite style and enjoy! Plus, I’ll show you a few extra touches that make these decorated pots perfect handmade gifts for just about every occasion except for Labor Day. Because really, who gives gifts on Labor Day?

General preparation for ALL flower pot projects: I started with plain ol’ terra cotta pots, and gave them several coats of paint. They’re like vampire pots because they suck up paint– it’s going to take a few coats– but the good news is they dry quickly. Try to keep your brush moving and blend in to avoid brush strokes. You can use craft paint, but I found this great outdoor paint made just for terracotta pots in the same area as the pots at Michaels so if you plan to use them outdoors it’s worth the extra investment:

::: Modern White and Gold Ombre Flower Pots

Do you love the modern look of ombre and gold? I’m certainly a fan.  Here’s an easy way to get the look. Start with the general preparation instructions above. Then, use a piece of soft cloth and rub gold cream (I used Inka Gold Metallic Rub, found in the stamping aisle at Michaels) onto the pot starting at the bottom.

Then I worked my way up, lightening the amount each time until the last swirl around was just a whisper.

I adore the look, and want to make two more to match. They’ll look great decorating my deck this summer, then on windowsills or a console table when fall rolls around again. (Must it? MUST IT REALLY COME BACK?!)

::: Distressed Moss Rimmed Flower Pots

Again, start with the general preparations above. Once paint is dry, lightly sand a few areas with sandpaper for a ‘distressed’ look. Then, cut moss ribbon (I found it in the floral crafts area) to the size of the rim of the planter and hot glue around the top. Add extra moss in where needed.  Pop in a succulent (I used faux) and you’re done. COULD NOT BE EASIER.

::: Spring Green Painted Flower Pots (Handmade Gift Idea!)

Really, any of these flower pots would make great handmade gifts but this one truly ‘speaks’ for itself. Ha. Literally.

Begin by following the general directions above. Then, lightly dip a dry paintbrush into green paint. Dab onto a paper towel to remove most of the paint, and lightly brush around the pot. You aren’t going for coverage, just a ‘whisper’ of paint. You can get more fancy by adding other colors and accents. I did a super light coat of gray chalkboard paint, but gold would have been cool was well. Here’s a close-up:

Once dry, I hot glued on this wooden ‘thanks’ tag to make this a perfect handmade Thank You gift.

Michaels also had adorable chalkboard plant sticks on which to write messages. Again, GREAT HANDMADE GIFT IDEA ALERT!

In case you’re wondering why I didn’t get a great photo of all the plants together, here’s one reason:

A rare Bee photo. See that smile? I melt. He kept begging me to take his photo with the flowers. Challenge accepted. Minus the flower part, because those eyes were making it hard.

Thank goodness for Instagram.
