DIY Halloween Decor: Glowing Luminaries

Last year I guest posted this easy Halloween craft idea over on Sew Woodsey, and I realized I never shared it here. Thankfully Halloween came around again so I finally have my chance. 😉 The thing is, I’m not a big Halloween decorator– my kids get scared easily so we can’t get too spooky. Plus, I simply don’t have time to get all fancy just to take everything down again. That means I’m always on the lookout for easy, not-spooky, and simple fall and Halloween decor ideas; hopefully you’ll agree that these DIY Halloween Luminaries fit the bill!
Amazingly, I had all these supplies on hand so the final cost was FREE. But even if you don’t, the supplies are all things you can pick up inexpensively or use again, making them super cost efficient.
I’m not sure if these particular stickers are still in stock (my mom gave them to me last year), but I’m guessing there are lots along this theme. This sheet happens to be from Martha Stewart, but if you can’t find them paper die cuts and an adhesive should do the trick.
Supplies:
- Freezer Paper
- Silhouette stickers of Halloween themes or similar die cuts (cats, witches, bats, moons, mice, etc.)
- clear tape
- glass vase
- battery operated tealight candles
- scissors
Step One: Begin by cutting your freezer paper to the correct height and width to wrap completely around your vase.
This rectangular vase was purchased at IKEA for our wedding eight years ago; as if that isn’t cheap enough, I see them at thrift stores all the time. You could use any shape vase as long as the opening is wide enough to fit the battery operated candles.
Step Two: Next, place stickers on the waxy side of the freezer paper. They should stick nicely, and the bonus is they are repositionable. As you can see, I “rolled” my vase as I applied the stickers as an easy way to eyeball where they’d line up once finished.
Step Three: Attach one end of the paper to the vase with clear tape, wrap it around (wax side against the glass) and apply clear tape at the seam.
Step Four: Turn on electric tealights and place inside vase.
Step Five: Step back and watch the magic happen!
These would look great lining your walkway, as table decor, and even centerpieces. Your unique Halloween luminaries will be show-stoppers, trust me.
There’s our semi-spooky Halloween decor– kid-friendly and pretty to boot (at least I think so, ha!) What’s your Halloween decorating style, super spooky or upscale? Skeletons and skulls or pumpkins and hay bales? All of the above?
