Many moons ago, back when I wore heels and did cool things, I went with a few friends to a preview party for the musical Wicked. Aside from the green ‘Elphaba’ martinis, the other party food idea I clearly remember was the veggies and dip they served in shot glasses. When I found this shot glass set a few weeks ago, I knew I had to come up with a clever way to use them so they didn’t become clutter but rather something we’d actually use.
It also so happens that we signed up for a CSA farm share this summer, and I’m always looking for various ways to use all that produce. Can you see where I’m going with this?
Thanks to an abundance of carrots and a tub of my fave hummus (Whole Foods!) staring me in the face, I put two and two together and made… three? No, that’s not right, but you know what I mean. I put a dollop of hummus at the bottom of the shot glass and stuck some carrot and celery slices inside.
The kids went NUTS for them. And I was happy to have a quick and healthy snack on hand that they’d love! Plus, it’s a use for all those college shot glasses you hoard in your upper cabinets (anybody? anybody? is this just me?!)
If you don’t want to use your beloved vintage and/or college sorority shot glasses with the fear your kids will break them, then they sell plastic versions at most party stores. This is also a simple and fun party food idea. Line them up by the dozen for easy snacking at your next party. Of course you don’t have to use hummus; fill the glass with dip, ranch dressing, you name it.
*Someone* loves the glasses so much, he uses them for smoothies. Another day, another healthy snack in a shot glass (and a Smoothie ‘Stache). Who knew?
Sigh. He’s getting so big. I’ll be happy if he only uses shot glasses for hummus and smoothies from here on out, thankyouverymuch.
There you have it– an excuse to go ahead and splurge $2 on a shot glass set and/or continue to hoard your college shot glasses. You’re welcome.

Oh, so sad, a few years ago we got rid of our red plastic tumblers that said “Homecoming 1991 – It’s not over till we’re sober”. If those cups could talk… LOL!!
