It’s time to spice up my bedroom– um, bedroom decor, that is. 😉 I’ve been working on redecorating the master bedroom for awhile, slowly gathering my resources, window shopping, and taking time to to truly decide how I want the room to feel.
I’ve learned the very first step in a successful design is to take inventory of your style and how you’d love your room to look and feel. I’ve talked about how to do this again and again (like here and here), so instead of describing the process again like a broken record I thought I’d skip ahead to photos of beautiful bedrooms that are inspiring my master bedroom design. Do kids these days even know what ‘broken record’ means? #digress
Step One: Rounding Up Design Ideas and Inspiration
First, the bed. After looking at my bedroom decorating ideas pinboard two styles popped out immediately: four poster beds and upholstered beds. I mean, really. LOVE.

After much thought, I nixed the four poster bed idea because my two little minions would use them as monkey bars. Therefore I went for upholstered headboards, similar to these beautiful bedroom looks:

I found an upholstered bed I adore and ordered it back in January; I’ll share it with you next week! Until then, onward with my master bedroom wish list..
Another thing I’d love to incorporate is a reading nook in the corner. Wouldn’t that be dreamy?

Of course, designing any room is about a feeling. Even if these bedrooms aren’t exactly what I’m going for, they make my heart sing:

You can view more bedroom design ideas and pieces on my Bedroom Ideas pinboard– is your style similar? If not, how would you sum up your style?
Now that I’ve shared a few of the looks I’m dreaming about for our bedroom decorating adventure, the next step is creating a design board tailored to the actual space and available pieces in my price range. Stay tuned for my master bedroom design board next week… oh, the possibilities!
Take inventory of your bedroom space right now: is it exactly how you’d love it to be? Does it need some help? What are your favorite parts, and which areas need either a quick fix or a total makeover? Tell me all about it!

Thanks, Carrie, for including our post on our daughter’s accent wall. I’m making over my bedroom as well. Here’s my inspiration board: http://martysmusings.net/2014/03/gray-and-coral-bedroom-inspiration.html I had so much fun getting inspired. Can’t wait to see yorus!

My bedroom is a disaster! I like our nightstands alright & the fact that our mattress is a king, but that’s about it. We need to change the flooring and repaint (we pulled down a chair rail, so the walls are a MESS!). I plan on updating the curtains, some bedding, and the accessories…maybe a rug if we go with wood floors.
I am at the stage of gathering inspiration. I struggle with weeding out the trends from what I REALLY love, so I don’t want to jump into purchases too quickly. Some themes I see in my pins are ethnic touches, big mirrors, and a lot of white. Now to make it work!

Pinned! Love these ideas… new home ideas are flowing now!!! 🙂

Carrie! I love your sense of design and style. These are beautiful. Totally in love with the photos hanging on the wall! SO PRETTY!

I’m really hoping to get our bedroom done this year. The color swatch has only been on the wall for 2 years. I think Darla DeMorrow may have laughed when she saw it. 🙂
I love the bedding with the pop of orange! That would go great with the wall color I selected.
Carrie Higgins says
I have swatches on walls that old too, Barb! It’s an illness. 😉 I love that bedding too. I found a duvet comforter at Target that’s VERY similar and came thisclose to buying it!
Jennifer @Making Our Life Matter says
It is really hard to define my master bedroom space because my husband is not in to all the frilly cutsie stuff. He doesn’t do posters, and upholstered headboard? No way. So, how can I blend his minimalistic side with my sort of romantic one? The only thing we agreed on was the wall color, which is a sea green. Which I want to change to beige. I think. LOL. See what I mean?
Carrie Higgins says
I was just about to applaud you for at least agreeing on a color, haha! Maybe do a sea green accent wall with the other walls beige. I agree, it’s really tough to blend styles. I’ve found it’s best to compromise on most items, but each of you should have a thing or two in the room that you absolutely love. I think romantic and minimalist CAN coexist; with lots of compromise! Also, don’t tell your husband I said this but sometimes you’ve just got to go for the vision in your head and know that once the pieces are all pulled together he’ll end up liking it– just don’t go overboard with the frills and go instead for a romantic FEELING rather than tons of romantic details. Maybe drag him to Homegoods and let him pick out the art for the walls. 😉
Jennifer @Making Our Life Matter says
LOL. I think I could get him to do the accent wall. And as far as letting him pick out art? Well, we would probably end up with a poster of the Eagles, and a fathead of Claude Giroux!

Beautiful bedrooms!! I would love a complete make-over. I do like my blue walls though 🙂
Carrie Higgins says
I’d LOOOOOOVE blue walls; that’s actually one of the only colors I’d paint my walls!
Jessica @EatSleepBe says
Those are gorgeous. I love light master bedrooms. That white headboard is a stunner too! There is something about a light or white room that just feels more relaxing to me.
Mary Pat says
I have an idea for our master bedroom that came up when someone suggested I use the fabric from an old dress of my mothers to make pillow covers. I’m pretty sure the dress is satin and is what I would call a dusty lavender almost gray. I’ve been thinking about painting the walls a coordinating gray (not too dark) and using white bedding. My bedroom furniture is black. Not sure what to go for as far as window treatments go. Now I just have to find someone I can trust to make the pillows. Any suggestions or changes you would make?
Carrie Higgins says
It sounds lovely! I adore gray/white bedroom combos. Perhaps the window treatments could be pretty pattern or a lighter solid so the room isn’t too dark.
Brenda says
How was the wood cutout headboard made? That’s what I’ve been waiting for. Amazing.
Carrie Higgins says
I have no idea, but it sure is amazing!
