We are so in love with our 3-season porch addition! With composite decking, EZE Breeze windows, and weather resistant outdoor decorations, our three season porch is the perfect outdoor living space throughout most of the year. Check out how we built and decorated our dream porch!

The first big project we completed in our newly constructed home was the 3-season porch. We ended up adding it after closing with our chosen contractor as opposed to using our home builder. This saved tons of money as well as allowed us to truly customize it the way we wanted– from materials to location to design decisions, we wanted to have the final word. And I’m SO happy with the results!

‘BEFORE’ Photos: Turning Our Deck Into a Porch

This is how the area looked prior to construction. The contractor ended up using existing deck structure and adding more columns to support the full weight of the porch according to the specs needed. They did remove the decking because we replaced it with composite planks.

We totally changed the footprint of the original area because we wanted enough space to put a full outdoor sectional as well as a dining table, plus an area to watch t.v. and movies.

And now… the AFTER Photos!

As you can see, we transformed the space and thanks to the 3 season windows that slide from screen to vinyl, we can use it almost year-round (December and January are usually too cold to be out here enjoyably, but sometimes we get a day that’s warm enough to hang out!)

As you can see, adding curtains gives us privacy from neighbors as well as blocks strong afternoon sunlight. Bonus, it gives the space a resort type of feel! You can read all about how to hang outdoor curtains here.

What makes this a three season porch?

The difference between a screened porch and a 3-season porch is the type of window. We used a brand called EZE-Breeze, and they slide from screens to a vinyl that looks like glass. We keep the vinyl windows up during the spring (pollen season) and winter, and as soon as the pollen goes away slide the screens up summer through fall.

If it were a year round porch, it would have glass windows and a tile or solid surface floor. Our floor is made of composite decking, which does allow air to flow through.

TIP: we put a screen underneath the flooring to prevent bugs from entering through the floor boards.

What type of windows are on your three season porch?

As mentioned above, we used a brand called EZE-Breeze and when you slide them down they’re screens (as seen below), and when you slide them up it’s a clear vinyl material that looks like glass. It’s very strong, you can push into it a few inches and it goes back to it’s original shape within seconds.

Here’s the space before I added curtains and got a new sectional, but it shows how the windows look when the vinyl section is up.

Adding Outdoor Furniture to the Covered Porch

Even though the porch is protected, we still wanted outdoor rated furniture and rugs. Thankfully, there’s so many great choices out there now!

The final touch is to add outdoor decor. From outdoor throw pillows to lanterns to plants, details really do make a difference.
