A Day in the Life of an Essential Oiler

I’m taking a quick break from our Decluttering & Organizing Challenge today to answer one of the biggest questions I get asked about essential oils: HOW do you use essential oils, and WHAT do you use them for on a day-to-day basis? Looking back, it’s hard to believe that I started using essential oils just 9 months ago. It feels like a lifetime, the way we’ve incorporated them into our daily routine. It’s not an understatement to declare they’ve given me my life back. A year ago I was physically suffering through my days– and now, watch out, world! Today I’m taking you on a behind the scenes tour of a day in the life of our oily family.

It’s important to note I don’t use EVERY oil listed below EVERY day (though I do use SOME oils EVERY day, if that makes sense). This is an amalgam of oils I use during the week. Always do your research and consult the Quick Reference Guide I send with your Premium Starter Kit to figure out what’s best for YOU and YOUR family. What works for us may not work for you since we’re all built a little differently, so figure out your personal needs and go for it! In our home, we use essential oils as a first line of defense and use our common sense when applying. They still boggle my mind on the daily, these little miracles in a bottle.

TIP: PUT THE OILS WHERE YOU’LL USE THEM. If I had to run upstairs to find lemon oil each morning, I’d never use it. I’ve even bought multiple bottles of oils or decanted into sample bottles to place around the house. This is THE BEST tip for having oils on hand when you need them and truly getting them to work for you!

6:45 AM   Wake up, usually to my alarm clock (named BEN). The first thing I do is drink water with a drop of lemon oil. I also carry around a glass water bottle with lemon oil during the day (make sure any time you use a citrus oil it’s in a glass container, otherwise it will melt the container!)   Lemon oil supports your body’s natural cleansing ability, plus I love the taste. I mean, hello– I’m making (sugar free) lemonade!  😉

7:10 AM  Shower time, so I mix some Young Living Shower Gel base with a few drops of the energizing Citrus Fresh oil for a natural body wash. The YL Satin Face Scrub in Mint wakes up whatever was still sleeping, and my face thanks me for the minty fresh start. Now I’m (mostly) ready to face the day.

8:00 AM   Time for some NingXia Red! I can not live happily without this in my day, it has changed my life. Made with the NingXia Wolfberry (prized for longevity), NR gives me the boost I need to get through my day (and especially what used to be sluggish) afternoons. The taste is great too, like a blueberry/pomegranate blend. Again, words (literally, since the FDA is watching) can’t convey how much this has helped me. We’re doing a month-long NingXia Red Challenge in February if anyone wants to join us!

8:25 AM  Detangling my daughter’s bedhead used to be a nightmare. Now I use a spray bottle of DIY detangling spray featuring lavender, rosemary, copaiba and peppermint oil: no more tangles! And NO critters either, thank you very much. If you have a school aged daughter, you know what I’m referring to, right? We’ve been using this daily and so far, so good.

8:30 AM  Before the kids leave for school, I rub Thieves oil on the bottom of their feet to boost immunity. Thieves is a hot oil, but it doesn’t bother my kids on their feet. If they’re fighting off the yuckies, then I dilute with a carrier oil (I use Young Livings V-6 oil) and apply up and down their spines often. The key is consistency and frequency!

8:45 AM  A dash of dill oil on the inside of my wrists to chase away sugar cravings. Of course now I want a pickle, but that’s better than sugar, right?

9:30 AM Dropped off the kids and now it’s time to workout, which means VALOR! I lurve the fresh scent and it gives me a pre-workout confidence boost.

10:30 AM  Ooof, my trainer kicked my butt. I work out with her once a week to help keep my strength up, and today we pushed it a bit. Time for my Deep Relief roll-on, it goes DEEP into your muscles and soon I’m blissed out and happy. Wait, did I work out today? Ahhhhhh…

11:00 AM What’s that smell? Look like I left the Mahi Mahi in the garbage overnight and my home is smelling a bit… peaked. Running Purification in the diffuser takes that away almost instantly. I also use Purification as a room spray, bug spray, and I put a few drops on my dryer balls as a natural laundry freshener.

12:00 PM STRESSED! My to-do list is so long how am I going to get it all done? Time to breathe and apply Stress Away to the back of my neck. Now where’s that list?

2:00 PM Craving something to drink, so I down a glass of water with a drop of grapefruit oil to support a healthy weight and I’m off to pick up the kids.

3:45 PM Home from school and it’s time for snack. Wash hands and for the stubborn germs one dab of this Thieves hand sanitizer does the trick. Smells amazing and it’s so much better than putting artificial fragrances and chemicals on my kiddo’s hands. I carry this with me EVERYWHERE and have it tucked around my house wherever clean hands are a must– like in the middle of our kitchen table. Looks like it’s time to order more, YIKES!

5:00 PM The witching hour. Lovely. I’m trying to juggle homework, making dinner, playing trains, and answering emails. A few deep breaths of peppermint and I’m focused again. This is a favorite trick for long car rides, too– with all our road-tripping, I keep a bottle of peppermint in my car for this very purpose. And if my head starts to pound– peppermint to the rescue.

7:00 PM  Post-dinner clean-up with my trusty Thieves cleaner! This stuff works beautifully and smells like Christmas, plus it’s safe enough to use around children and pets. It has over 30+ uses around the house, from counters to bathrooms to floors. Plus it’s uber-concentrated so a bottle can last years, I simply put two tablespoons in a spray bottle and add water. We HEART Thieves cleaner.

8:00 PM  BEDTIME FOR KIDDOS. That means diffusers in both rooms (they BEG for them). Tonight my daughter is stuffy so we run a few drops of R.C. oil in her diffuser all night long. If I could kiss the R.C. bottle I would, it has made SUCH a difference in her life! Plus some Thieves oil (diluted) on her spine, and she’ll be back on track before we know it. My son was complaining about his ears, so I place some diluted Purification behind each ear. If they get worse I’ll call the doctor tomorrow, but he’s happy, until…

8:15 PM “Mommy! You forgot my sleeping oil!!!!!!” he belts out from the top of the stairs. Ooops, I did. Without Peace & Calming oil he’ll be up all night building train tracks and rearranging furniture, but a few drops in his feet and it’s zzzzzzz time in minutes.

9:00 PM Kids are in bed, so now I dab Frankincense on my face to support skin health (oh how I wish I could tell you what this did for me! GAH! Email me!)  Time to work for a few hours, so I dab some Valor along my jaw. I enjoy it’s scent and finish up a post to boot, I’m so happy it’s back in stock after being OUT for several months.

11:00 PM  Mama’s bath time! I mix a few drops of lavender oil with the Young Living shower and bath gel base and hop into my calming bubble bath. No photos of that, you’re welcome.

11:30 PM  Sleep has never been easy for me. Never ever ever been easy. However, I figured out what works for me.  Valerian is not a pleasant smelling oil, but does support healthy sleep so I rub it into my feet and cover with socks and ignore the grimaces from my husband.  A few drops of lavender on my hands and rubbed over the pillows erase the Valerian scent, and ahhhhhhhh… good night!  Tranquil Roll-On, Cedarwood and RutaVaLa are also great for supporting a good night’s sleep.
