Do you know what I didn’t factor into the kitchen renovation budget? The $146.89 that it’s going to cost to replace two oven racks for our stove.
One of the contractors placed the tray from our highchair into our 6 month old oven, and forgot to take it out. In my “our stove is hooked up again” high, I forgot to check before turning it on.
In my defense, it had been 10 days since I’d had a stove.
I mean really, are you supposed to check the oven before preheating?
Yes. Apparently the answer is yes.
Anyone know a cheap place to get oven racks? Or have some extra GE Profile oven racks hanging around that you don’t need? I just can’t fathom spending that money on such a stupid thing I did. Or “we” did. It wasn’t all my fault, was it?
Sigh. Probably don’t answer that.

Can you believe I had something so similar happen to me and it was right before we sold our house? My hubby left the bottom cover to a pan and put it in the oven during a dinner party, melted on the rack and we couldn’t get it off. Sorry! Then, they sent the oven rack and can you believe it was sent to Angela Melton? Lol! Melt on the rack is right.

oh no!!! I can’t imagine how that smelled melting in your oven! Sorry to hear that happened to you!!

I don’t think it’s your fault at all. If I didn’t keep something that could melt in my oven, I wouldn’t think to look in it before preheating. (Confession: I don’t preheat unless I bake. I’m lazy.) Do you think the other guy might split the cost with you? (Or accept responsibility?)

A contractor put a pastic object into the oven??? Was there no other place to put it?

Ugh, what a pain! And I never check my oven before preheating…
Why would your contractor put the high chair tray cover in the *oven*? Dishwasher, I can understand. But oven? Maybe he should take some of the responsibility…

Who stores something plastic in the oven!? I definitely think the contractor is at least as much at fault as you are. It’s good practice to check first, but most people don’t.
So sorry!

I hope you haven’t thrown them away yet! Here’s an idea to try – Spray them HEAVILY with WD-40, wrap securely (so they won’t leak!) in a strong trash bag and put in the freezer for at least 24 hours. With any luck, the plastic will start chipping off of the racks and then only require stiff scrubbing with a Chore Girl or Chore Boy. (do they even still make those? If not, use steel wool – WEAR GLOVES!!! Steel wool in your finger tips is no laughing matter!) When you put them in the freezer try to keep them as flat as possible to keep the WD-40 on the bars.

oh my goodness…totally NOT your fault, but how frustrating!!!

Sitting here with my mouth open.. OMG! If you don’t normally store stuff (plastic stuff at that) in your oven when it isn’t on, I believe it is totally normal to not check before turning it it on. yIkes! I hope you find an inexpensive solution soon.

Boo! What an odd place for a plastic tray. Don’t feel bad, I never check my oven before I turn it on because it’s suppose to be empty.
