Discover practical storage and organization tips for board games, card games, and puzzles that make choosing a game for family game night a delightful experience.

I still remember the moment I realized our game closet had become a battleground of clutter and chaos. It was game night, and as I stood before a teetering stack of board game boxes and an overflowing basket of card games, the overwhelming decision of “Which game should we play?” struck me like a ton of bricks. The card games were all jumbled together, some hidden beneath others in precarious stacks, and many board games were unseen in the back corner of the closet- hidden somewhere in the mess. It was then that I knew something had to change. After all, research shows that kids who have organized toys and games tend to play longer and more often with them because when everything has its own place, it’s more accessible and fun to use.

In this post, I’m excited to share my personal journey and practical tips on how I transformed our game closet into a functional space that makes game nights a breeze. Whether you’re looking for board game storage ideas, clever card game organization, or a new approach to storing puzzles, I’ve got you covered!

A Fresh Start with Card Games

One of the easiest wins in my overhaul came from tackling the card games. Previously, our card games were tossed into a basket, forming a disorganized stack that made it nearly impossible to find the one we wanted without digging through a pile of others. That’s when I discovered a clever storage idea: a clear plastic over-the-door shoe hanger. I installed one on the inside of our closet door, turning unused space into a neat display area. This hanging closet organizer became my favorite way to store card games because it doesn’t take up extra storage space in the closet and keeps every game in plain sight.

To make things even more organized, I used 3.5 x 5 inch Avery labels to label the individual pockets on the hanger. The Avery website even offers free templates to create custom labels that perfectly match your needs. Now, every card game is visible at a glance—no more rummaging through a cluttered basket. The card games are arranged in alphabetical order, making it effortless to locate the one you’re looking for. This simple system not only improves accessibility but also adds a bit of personality to our game closet, allowing the kids to pick their favorite card games with ease.

Revitalizing Board Game Storage

Board games, with their various sizes and components, can be a nightmare to store if not organized properly. While some people choose to discard the original packaging, I prefer to keep the board game boxes. They add character and a nostalgic charm to our storage space.

Step 1: Securing the Contents

I began by opening each board game’s box to inspect the contents. Using small rubber bands, I secured the cards, and placed the small game pieces into little plastic bags. This precaution meant that when we turned the games on their sides for storage, not a single board game piece would escape—a must, since nobody likes the sinking feeling of setting up a game only to discover one key piece is missing. It also meant that the game’s box, even if it looked a little worse for wear (imagine a cardboard box that has been through a mini demolition derby), was now both neat and secure.

Step 2: Repair and Reinforce

After ensuring that all the components were safely contained, I replaced the lids on the board game boxes. To give them extra durability, I used packing tape to secure the edges of the game’s box. I know it sounds a bit over the top, but trust me—the extra reinforcement has kept our board game boxes looking much better over time. Finally, I wrapped a large thick black rubber band around each box to keep everything in place. There are even specialized board game bands available that stretch in both directions around the box; while they might come at an additional cost, they’re worth considering if you have an entire board game collection that you want to keep in pristine condition.

Step 3: Reorganizing the Shelf

Once everything was secure, I arranged the board games back on the shelf—lying on their sides. This not only saved space but also created an appealing display where all the game titles were visible at a glance. I love this open shelf method because it turns our board game closet into a mini-library of fun. I grouped the board games by size, but they could also be arranged alphabetically, by color, or by type (strategy, party, etc.). I had a few games that were too tall store on their side, hence the one shelf of horizontal storage.

A New Home for Puzzles

Puzzles always had a way of contributing to the clutter in our game closet. Instead of trying to store them in their bulky cardboard boxes, I opted for a more streamlined approach. I purchased large, mesh zipper pouches for the puzzle pieces. I carefully cut out the front picture from each puzzle box and placed it inside the pouch along with all the pieces. This not only preserved the visual appeal of the original packaging but also ensured that every puzzle was easily identifiable.

Each mesh zipper pouch was labeled with the puzzle’s theme and the number of pieces it contains. I then stored these pouches vertically in an open plastic container with a low lip for easy grabbing. Since puzzles tend to be used less frequently than board games or card games, I placed the container higher up in the closet. This simple switch has made a huge difference, turning what was once a mess into a clean, efficient storage solution.

Additional Organization Tips for the Whole Closet

Our game closet isn’t just home to board games, card games, and puzzles—it’s also a storage hub for various sizes of other fun items, such as the marble run, a dress making kit, a couple of craft supply boxes, and even a few trains. Here are some extra organization tips that I found invaluable:

1. Optimize Storage Bins and Totes

I realized that many of our previous storage containers were opaque and barely held everything we needed. Upgrading to transparent storage bins has been a game changer. Not only do these bins make it easier for the kids to see what’s inside, but they also add a neat, uniform look to our game closet.

2. A Stool for Easy Access

One clever addition to our game closet is a small stool stored at the bottom. This may seem unconventional, but it’s a small detail that makes a big difference. My kids have always been fiercely independent, and having a stool accessible in the game closet means they can reach their favorite games and toys without having to climb on unstable surfaces or built-ins that weren’t meant for standing. A little planning goes a long way in preventing little disasters.

3. Don’t Forget the Lists!

To further simplify our game night decisions, I created laminated lists of all our board games and card games. I tucked these lists in the bottom pouch of the over-the-door organizer alongside the card games. For some of us, even an organized game closet can feel overwhelming, so these lists provide a helpful guide for those who prefer to choose from a written list rather than sifting through the options.

The Impact of an Organized Game Closet

It’s fascinating to see how a few simple organization tips can breathe new life into a space that once felt like a jumbled mess. Whether you’re reorganizing your entire game closet or just looking for board game storage solutions for your favorite board games, taking the time to plan and implement these ideas can make all the difference. Even if you have a whole closet of games or just a modest collection of card games and puzzles, these strategies work wonders.

In the end, organizing isn’t about perfection—it’s about making life easier and more enjoyable for everyone in the household. With a few thoughtful purchases (yes, even a large rubber band or two can be a lifesaver), a bit of creativity, and the willingness to try new storage ideas, you can transform your entire board game storage closet into a place of inspiration and order. And as an added bonus, the kids get to enjoy their games more, play longer, and even learn a bit about the value of keeping things tidy.

Happy organizing, and here’s to many more fun-filled, stress-free game nights ahead!
