Homemade Hot Chocolate Cones: Budget-Friendly and Full of Cheer!

When the chilly months arrive, there’s nothing quite as comforting as a warm cup of hot chocolate in hand. One of my family’s favorite traditions is slipping into our coziest pajamas, pouring hot cocoa into to-go cups, and setting off to admire the magical glow of Christmas lights around town. We repeat this tradition at least five times every holiday season—because, honestly, it just wouldn’t be the same without it. If we ever run out of hot chocolate, trust me, I hear about it. It’s the heart (and warmth!) of our festive adventures.
If you’re looking for a simple, thoughtful, and festive homemade gift idea, these Hot Chocolate Cones are perfect. They’re easy to make, budget-friendly, and a hit with kids and adults alike. Plus, I’ve included free printable gift tags to make your gift extra special!
Why Homemade Hot Chocolate Cones?
Hot chocolate cones are not just adorable—they’re practical and delightful. They make wonderful gifts for teachers, neighbors and friends. They also make great stocking stuffers or party favors, and they’re a fun activity to do with kids. With just a few ingredients and a little creativity, you can create something festive and delicious.
Supplies You’ll Need
Here’s what you need to make your hot chocolate cones:
- Clear cone bags
- Hot chocolate mix
- Mini marshmallows
- Mini chocolate chips
- Peppermint chips (crushed candy canes work too!)
- Christmas ribbon
- Twist ties (come with the cone bags)
- Free printable gift tags (Put in your name and e-mail to download below!)
How to Assemble Hot Chocolate Cones
- Layer the Ingredients
- Open a cone bag and hold it upright. Add hot chocolate mix as the first layer (about 3/4 cup). Gently tap the bag on a flat surface to level out the layer. Then use a twist tie to secure the hot cocoa. It should be separate from the toppings so it can be mixed in first.
- Next, get a second cone bag and push the cone bag with hot chocolate down into the second bag. Ensure that it’s pushed all the way to the tip of the cone.
- Then add mini chocolate chips (about ¼ cup), followed by peppermint chips (2 Tbsp) for a festive touch.
- Finally, top with a generous layer of mini marshmallows. I used about a cup because you can never have too many marshmallows!
- One cocoa cone will make two 12-14 oz cups of hot cocoa.
- Seal and Decorate
- Once the bag is filled, twist the open end tightly to secure the ingredients. Use a Christmas ribbon to seal it. Download and print the free gift tags to thread onto the ribbon before tying a bow.

Tips for Success
- Use high-quality ingredients: Splurge on a rich hot chocolate mix and premium chocolate chips for the best flavor.
- Get creative: Swap peppermint chips for caramel bits or use white chocolate chips for a twist!
- Double bag for durability: If gifting to kids or mailing, consider placing the cone in a second bag for extra protection.
