Every evening, our routine is the same: I cook dinner, and my husband does the dishes—a system that works great, except for one little problem. Since he’s the one grabbing the dishwasher detergent and cleaning supplies, I don’t think much about what’s going on under the sink, which is probably why it turned into a chaotic jumble of trash bags, sponges, and mystery bottles over time. Out of sight, out of mind, right? But enough was enough—I wanted a functional and organized storage under the kitchen sink that made it easier for both of us to access what we needed. Here’s exactly how I tackled this project and how you can do it, too!

Step 1: Measure Your Space & Identify Your Storage Needs

Before diving into organizing, start by measuring the width and depth of your cabinet. This will help determine what storage solutions will fit best while still leaving enough room for your plumbing and pipes.

Next, decide what the main objectives of your storage under the kitchen sink will be. For me, I had three priorities:

  1. Store cleaning supplies and soaps
  2. Dispense trash bags efficiently
  3. Create a designated spot for dirty washcloths

Your storage needs might be different. So be sure to identify what they are before you choose your storage solutions.

Step 2: Choosing the Right Storage Solutions

With my main objectives in mind, I chose two storage products. The key to a functional under-sink cabinet is maximizing your available space while keeping easy access to daily essentials. Here’s what I picked and why:

  • Two-Tier Pull-Out Organizer: This organizer creates easier access to frequently used cleaning supplies like dishwashing pods, spray bottles, and scrub brushes. It comes with suction cups or double-sided tape to secure it in place. I opted for the tape but saved the suction cups for future adjustments.
  • Stackable Acrylic Garbage Bag Dispenser: I love that this spacious trash bag dispenser holds multiple rolls, making it easy to store and dispense bags efficiently. Its transparent design lets me quickly see when we’re running low, and the bamboo lids complement the tiered organizer perfectly. The side handles make it easy to move, and I’m using the stacked one to hold washcloths ready for laundering.

The great thing about the two-tier pull-out organizer is that it came in a two-pack. You could put one on each side of the cabinet as pictured, or use them separately in different cabinets. I’m using one for storage under the kitchen sink and one in my bathroom sink cabinet. They can be assembled to fit either a left or right corner, offering flexible configuration options for different spaces.

If my setup doesn’t quite fit your needs, there are plenty of other great storage solutions to consider. Small stackable clear bins can help organize dishwasher pods, sponges, gloves, or brush heads while keeping everything visible and easy to grab. Adhesive hooks on the inside of cabinet doors are a simple way to store scrub brushes or microfiber cloths without taking up shelf space. Choose what works best for your space and storage needs!

Step 3: Decluttering & Cleaning the Cabinet

Now, let’s get to the fun (or not-so-fun) part: decluttering! Start by pulling everything out of the cabinet. You’ll likely find some unexpected items lurking in the back of the cabinet.

Sort everything into three categories:

  1. Trash: Expired cleaners, empty bottles, and anything you no longer use.
  2. Rehome: Items that belong elsewhere in the house.
  3. Keep: Essentials that should stay under the sink.

Once sorted, vacuum and wipe down the cabinet base to remove dust, debris, and any moisture buildup. Then, add a cabinet shelf liner or silicone mat to protect the wood from water damage.

Step 4: Installing Your Storage Solutions

With your cabinet clean and prepped, it’s time to set up your storage solutions in a way that maximizes space and functionality. Think about how you use your kitchen and arrange items accordingly. Since our dishwasher is to the left, I placed the two-tier organizer on that side for easy access to dishwashing essentials. Our trash can is on the right, so I positioned the trash bags there for convenience. I also made sure our fire extinguisher had a clear, unobstructed spot—no digging through cleaning supplies in an emergency!

Step 5: Organizing & Putting Everything Back

Now comes the satisfying part—putting everything back in an organized way. A few tips:

  • Put frequently used items in the front: Everyday essentials like dish soap, sponges, and scrub brushes should be within easier access.
  • Don’t overstuff your cabinet: Sometimes less is more! Only keep the items you need and use regularly under your sink. This will help you maintain a clutter-free space.
  • Keep pipes clear: Avoid placing bulky items where they could interfere with plumbing.

Enjoy Your Newly Organized Cabinet!

Now, every time my husband opens the under-sink cabinet, he’s greeted with a clean, organized space instead of a chaotic mess. He no longer has to dig through clutter to find dish soap or wrestle with a roll of trash bags. Plus, the system is easy to maintain, keeping our kitchen running smoothly.

If your storage under the kitchen sink is in need of a refresh, I highly recommend taking an afternoon to tackle this project. With the right storage solutions and a little decluttering, you can transform this overlooked space into something truly functional. Happy organizing!
