Hanging & Maintaining the Trellis

When it comes to hanging and maintaining trellises, the good news is that you don’t have to look far! Any local home improvement store will likely have a variety of trellises to choose from, whether you’re looking for wood, metal, or even plastic options. Once you’ve picked the perfect trellis for your space, the next step is getting it securely hung. Many trellises come with easy-to-follow instructions, and if you’re attaching them to a wall or fence, you’ll just need some basic tools like a drill and screws. For a simple, sturdy setup, drilling directly into the wall or surface is often the best method.

As for maintenance, it’s important to give your trellises a little TLC to keep them looking their best year after year. A quick cleaning with a damp cloth can remove dirt and debris, and applying a protective coating (like teak oil for wood trellises) can help preserve the material and prevent wear. Regular checks for loose screws or signs of wear are also helpful, especially after harsh weather. Taking just a little time to maintain your trellises will keep them in great shape for seasons to come!

Choosing and Hanging the Pots

When I set this vertical herb garden up, I found the pots and hooks at IKEA in the kitchen organization section (next to the kitchen design section at my local IKEA, NOT in the Marketplace downstairs. They no longer carry these exact pots, but Amazon has lots of hanging pot options for vertical herb gardens. Choose a pot that’s at least six inches, to allow plenty of room for the herbs to grow. Many of the herb pots come in various color options with the hooks already attached to the pots. I love it when it’s easy!

Adding Color to Your Vertical Herb Garden

I love adding a pop of color to our vertical herb garden by mixing in some flowers. It not only brightens up the space but also keeps it looking vibrant all summer long. Petunias are a fantastic choice—they bring a burst of color and require very little maintenance, making them the perfect complement to the herbs. The combination of fragrant herbs and cheerful blooms creates a garden that’s as beautiful as it is functional!

Tips for Planting & Caring for Your Vertical Herb Garden

1. Choose the Right Location

Herbs love sunlight, so be sure to place your vertical garden in a spot that gets at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day. A sunny balcony, porch, or even a south-facing wall can be perfect for herbs.

2. Use Well-Draining Soil

Herbs don’t like to sit in soggy soil, so make sure to use a well-draining potting mix made for edible plants. Adding perlite or sand to your soil can help improve drainage and prevent root rot.

3. Know Your Herbs’ Water Needs

Different herbs have different water requirements. For herbs like thyme, rosemary, and mint, which are more drought-tolerant, you won’t need to water as often. On the other hand, leafy herbs like basil, dill, and oregano are thirstier and more fragile, so they’ll need regular watering to stay healthy.

4. Prune and Harvest Often

Regular pruning helps keep your herbs healthy and encourages new growth. Be sure to harvest leaves often to prevent them from getting too woody or going to seed. This also keeps your herbs producing all season long!

5. Add Support as Needed

If your herbs start to grow tall or leggy, adding a bit of extra support can keep them from flopping over. Small stakes, garden twine, or even a mesh frame can help keep everything upright and looking neat.
