One of our absolute favorite Christmas traditions is opening the Advent calendar each day. As my kids get older, it takes on deeper meaning but when they were little it was such a fun way to celebrate the arrival of Christmas. Now we focus a bit more on the meaning of Advent, and also enjoying each day as we lead up to Christmas.
The one year I tried to skip the Advent calendar, my kids protested. They told me they’re never too old for it, so this is one tradition I hope to keep going even if the content of the calendars changes as they age.
I’ve even given Advent calendars as gifts. One dear friend of mine loves Bonne Maman Jams and I gifted this advent to her last year and she still raves about it. It was a HUGE hit! Apparently it contains rare variations you can’t get anywhere else, and now I want one too.
The most important thing to note about buying Advent calendars is to get them EARLY. Especially this year with supply chain issues, you’ll want to buy them now because if you wait they sell out quickly. Especially limited edition calendars like the one above.
Favorite Books About Advent
If you’re looking to add more meaning to Advent aside from opening little paper doors in boxes, pair calendars with books about Advent. Here’s a few of our favorites, they include editions for all ages. You can read them each night, or in the morning before opening the door in an Advent calendar. This adds deeper meaning to a lovely holiday tradition.

Writing this post was such a walk down memory lane! We started with DIY Advent Calendars, and then switched to the Little People Nativity set above, and then moved onto LEGO Advent Calendars. Now I’m not sure what we’ll do as my kids are teens. I’m thinking the rock and mineral version or the Harry Potter one will be perfect for this age!
