When I decorate for fall, I want my fall decor to cozy up what we already have instead of creating more clutter. At our house, we focus our major holiday decorating efforts on Christmas so I want my fall decor to be simple, beautiful, and easy. The pieces in the following round-up can be added to your existing home decor to cozy it up for fall without much time or effort!
A soft throw blanket here, a fall toned pillow there… drape some wood beads over a vase, add gold ginkgo napkin rings to a placesetting. I love velvet pumpkins that can be added to the top of wide candleholders, or tucked into existing decor. I also change out my eucalyptus branches for fall branches such as these colorful maple leaves or ginkgo sprays.
Add a new wreath to the front door, some pumpkins and perhaps a seasonal doormat, and BOOM. Done! A cozy home that will last the season until it’s time to start decorating for that other big holiday. 😉
When should you start decorating for fall?
This depends on how you feel about fall, and also the climate in which you live. I’m a summer-loving girl who lives in the south, so I tend to wait until after Labor Day. After all, we still get temps in the 90s in September! Real pumpkins don’t last more than a week outside in those temperatures. However, if you love fall and live in, say, Maine… you may want to start adding fall decor at the end of August since your weather reflects that shift. I like to have my house fully decorated for fall by the time fall officially starts on September 22nd or 23rd, so I can enjoy it through Thanksgiving.
How do you decorate for fall on a budget?
Keep fall decor budget-friendly by using items you already have, or if purchasing, invest in decor items that can be used in every season. Glass domes, vases, lanterns, baskets, trays and candlesticks can all be decorated in various ways to reflect the season whether it’s spring, summer, winter or fall. Switch out the decor inside a tall lantern, add fresh branches to glass demijohn vases, drape blankets in baskets. Use natural elements that don’t cost a dime– such as acorns, branches and pinecones (just be sure to bake the bugs out of those first!) Shop your home and you may be surprised at what you already have.
