What is mulled cider?
To “mull” a drink means to heat and sweeten a drink with whole spices. Most mulled drinks are warmed slowly, so the spices can break down, and the flavors are infused into the drink.
Some people enjoy making mulled wine during the holidays, but I’m a huge fan of mulled cider during the entire fall and winter season. The sweet apples mingle beautifully with the bold rosemary, spicy cinnamon, and zesty oranges – it’s the quintessential holiday drink. Your home will smell divine, too.
Not all mulled drinks are alcoholic. You can easily make this drink without alcohol. It’s also just as easy to add a bit of rum to it as well for an adult version of this beverage.
Easy mulled cider in the slow cooker
Mulled cider is a family-friendly holiday drink that you can easily turn into a delicious cocktail. It’s a classic recipe, as old as roasting chestnuts or making popcorn garland.
Making mulled cider in the crock pot doesn’t just taste incredible, it also works as a room freshener as it fills your home with the tantalizing aromas of apples, cranberries, oranges, and cinnamon.
This is the perfect drink to make for a large group of carolers or when your friends or family come over for holiday visits. Everyone that enjoys apples will love this mulled cider recipe.
How to make crockpot mulled cider
If you have ever made a recipe in your slow cooker, you will definitely be able to make this one. You literally just add all the ingredients into the slow cooker and let it cook on the warm setting for 90 minutes. Keep scrolling for a printable version of this recipe, including all the ingredients and printable recipe card, plus a video if you prefer.
You don’t want to overcook it, so be sure to keep it on the warm setting.
The most time-consuming part of this mulled cider recipe is preparing the ingredients – slicing the oranges and grating fresh nutmeg. But those two steps will make all the difference in the world.
There is nothing like the smell and taste of zesty orange and spicy nutmeg.
Use whole sprigs of rosemary, freshly-sliced oranges, and whole cinnamon sticks will fill the cider with bolder flavors.
Serving ideas
There are two ways to serve this delicious Christmas drink. If you are serving it to children or others that prefer not to drink alcohol, just pour the hot cider into a mug and enjoy it.
It’s that easy!
Alternatively, if you want to spike the drink for adults, either add some rum directly into the slow cooker or add a shot of rum into the mug, pour the cider on top, and give it a gentle stir.
Whichever method you choose, mulled cider needs to be served warm.
Serve mulled cider with your favorite winter dessert, like pumpkin or apple pie. It’s the perfect drink to enjoy after looking at holiday lights or building a snowman. Plus, it fills your home with the most glorious scent.
You can even serve it to the family as a dessert drink after a big holiday meal. Let it simmer while you eat, and then it will be ready when you are finished.
How to store crockpot mulled cider
This is such a simple drink to make that it’s better to make and enjoy it fresh. If you want to store leftover mulled cider, remove the rosemary, cinnamon stick, and orange slices first. Then, pour the cider into your favorite drink pitcher.
It will stay fresh in the refrigerator for up to three days. For the best taste, I suggest warming it back up before you drink it.
