DIY Kitchen Art: Painted “Eat, Pray, Love” Plates

Amazingly, I haven’t read the book Eat, Pray, Love, nor have I seen the movie. Yet when I found a square plate for $1 at Homegoods, I knew I needed to find two more and create a set of plates to hang on the wall in my kitchen. And it needed to have that phrase!
I realize they appear to be two different colors, I have to say it doesn’t look like that in person:
Why “Eat Pray Love”? I don’t know, it just sounds like a fantastic message in a room that’s the heart of my family. With Noodle’s feeding issues, I should probably switch it to I’m PRAYing that you EAT, my LOVE! {for new followers, my daughter has horrible reflux due to a birth injury which led to her being fed by a tube and subsequent feeding issues, yada yada yada…)
Back to the plates. They were an absolute cinch. I created the set in under an hour. You could make anything or use any phrase. Here’s how:
I used this nifty new fine point black Sharpie Paint Pen. Who knew Sharpie now made paint pens? I’m sure any brand would work but I used this one because I’m obsessed with Sharpies, and office products in general. Bet you didn’t know that about me.
I used the paper the in which the plates were wrapped to create my templates. I freehanded the words, cut them out, and taped them onto the plates.
Then I outlined them with the paint pen.
After they were outlined, I pulled off the paper and fixed any rough areas. Then I filled in the text. Truthfully I have pretty messy handwriting so I was nervous how it would appear but it really came out better than expected.
I used a few plate hangers and presto, instant kitchen wall art! This was so easy I plan on making more. I’d love to do a few with branches or flowers, and some in a pattern– chevron, trellis, quatrefoil– all are SO hot right now. Imagine the places you can go with this! Much better than the generic kitchen art I was complaining about here.
