Teachers definitely deserve a “thank you” after a long year of giving and serving. They put in long hours and always go the extra mile to help their students be successful academically and socially. And, let’s be honest…some years are harder than other years—and this year was a doozy. But no matter what the year has brought, your child’s teacher has stood strong with them.

Printable Plant Tags: the Perfect Teacher Appreciation Gifts!

Teacher Appreciation season falls in May, at the height of spring growth and with summer just around the corner. It’s also a time of the year when everyone (even those without a green thumb) is showing interest in all things garden.

Giving a thoughtful teacher appreciation gift that also celebrates the growing season is the perfect plan. It’s like bringing a gift of year-long cheer to the teacher who has cared for your child all year long!

How to Use the Thanks for Helping me Grow Printable

I put together this free printable “thanks for helping me grow” tag together for you to use. Here’s how to turn it into a gift:

  • Choose a plant – I’ve included some suggestions below
  • Grab a pot – you can even consider personalizing it
  • Print the tag following the directions at the bottom of this post
  • After cutting the tag out, simply tape it to a bamboo skewer or long, sturdy straw
  • Insert stick into the soil around the plant

That’s it! A gift of cheer that can bring joy for years to come is ready to be gifted to that special teacher.

Which plant should I give a teacher?

You really can’t go wrong with choosing to give a plant as a gift. Cut flowers are nice, too, but they will only live for a few days. Ideally, we would like the plant to live long and prosper, so unless you KNOW the recipient has a green thumb, you’ll want to choose a plant that is sustainable, even for a novice.

Here are some easy to care for plants that make for perfect teacher appreciation gifts.

  • Snake Plant: also known as Mother in Law Tongue.
  • Aloe Vera: adds texture to a space, and also has healing benefits for burns/scrapes.
  • Bromeliads: adds a fun burst of color.
  • Pothos: fast-growing and easy to keep alive, plus this plant purifies the air in the home/classroom.
  • Spider Plant: easy to grow and to ‘root’ in other pots, so it’s a gift that can multiply!
  • Cactus: this could be a fun gift, especially if the class studied desert ecosystems that year.
  • Tillandsia: also known as “air plants”. There is no soil needed, so you can get creative with this display.
  • Violet Saintpaulia: also known as African violets, these pretty plants add a pop of purple color.
  • Ponytail Palms: fun, wispy strands that add texture.
  • Zamioculcas or ZZ Plant: a personal favorite! You may think this is a plastic plant at first glance, but it’s real and so easy to maintain.
  • Parlor Palm: adds lots of height and color, and is a powerhouse of an air-cleaner! This plant is probably too big for a child to tote in by themselves, but it would definitely be a gift the teacher would remember.

How to Make These Teacher Appreciation Gifts Even More Memorable

Want to step it up another notch? Here are a couple of ways to make this gift even more memorable.

Perhaps your child could decorate a blank terracotta pot themselves with some custom artwork. For young children, a handprint made in nontoxic paint on the pot can be a fun gesture.

I also recommend a sweet note or quote that is handwritten (with a child’s sweet handwriting) on the pot. This would definitely bring a smile to a teacher’s face.

Gift cars are ALWAYS appreciated; add a few to skewers and stick them right into the planter!

You can also opt to pair the plant with a care kit and include items such as a cute spray bottle and gardening scissors for quick trims, or grab a helpful book about houseplants.

Did you know you can order plants on Amazon? Here’s a few of my favorite plants and planters for teacher gifts.

Plants are such a wonderful way to thank a teacher because they can place them in their classroom or home as a reminder of how much they help children bloom and grow.

Plus, they’re eco-friendly and you’re not adding waste to a landfill… that’s a big plus in this day and age.

This makes a fantastic gift from the entire class too, just add in a few gift cards for a jaw-dropping surprise for your hard-working teacher!
