The night before Halloween, with ‘homemeade’ Sully lollipops and One-Eyed Mike Cookies in hand, the kids and I cuddled up to watch the long awaited release of Monsters University on Blu-Ray and DVD. My kids adored Monsters Inc, but we weren’t able to watch Monsters U while in the theaters. As a special treat for them we had a MU viewing session complete with themed treats. The snacks took less than 10 minutes total to prepare, and the kids thought they’d hit the jackpot when they got to nosh on lollipops and cookies. And I hit the jackpot, getting to have a family movie night with them– you can’t tell me there isn’t something magical about watching a Disney movie with your kids. MAGICAL, I tell you!
To prepare, I ran out to Walmart while the kids were at preschool to buy the special Monsters University Blu-ray + DVD gift set (with the Mike Infinity Figure). The Child Detection Agency van might have jumped in my cart as well. I added a few ingredients for the snacks, and in less than 15 minutes I had a ready-to-go Monsters University party.
And also? Walmart has bags that look like this. I almost bought all of them if I didn’t already have like 4,358 bags.
My son didn’t even let me get past the door with the bags once he spotted the combo pack.
Wow. What do you mean you need to take a photo of it?
You can get a photo of it now while I hug it, right?
Once I wrangled the Monsters University blu-ray out of my son’s hands (LOOK! A toy van!) we made the snacks.
Homemade Jolly Rancher Lollipops Recipe
Ingredients:
- Jolly Ranchers
- lollipop sticks
- tinfoil and parchment paper
The Sully lollipops were the easiest ever because they’re made from Jolly Ranchers. I KNOW. A cinch to make! We chose to use Sully’s green and blue colors for our pops.
First, preheat the oven to 225 degrees.
Then line a cookie pan with tinfoil then place a sheet of parchment paper on top. Lightly spray with non-stick spray. Place the Jolly Ranchers in groups of 3 touching as shown:
Melt in the oven for about 7 minutes. Keep an eye on them, you want them to look like this (note that the lollipop sticks are added in the next step):
Take them out of the oven, place a lollipop stick in the middle, and roll it one time to cover it with Jolly Rancher. Let cool. DONE! The kids thought it was magic.
Mike’s One-Eyed Cookie Recipe
Ingredients:
- large oreos
- mini-oreos
This isn’t really a recipe. You just take apart large oreos taking care to keep the icing on one side. Use the iced side as the bottom of the cookies. Take apart the mini-oreos, and place a mini-oreo on top of the iced large oreo. Gently try to wipe off cookie crumbs for picture taking. Voila! Mike Cookies!
When my husband arrived home from traveling the next day, the kids couldn’t wait to fill him in on every detail of the movie. Of course we’ll have to watch it again, just so daddy can see it too. And maybe we’ll have another family movie night, with the entire family this time– better break out the Oreos!
These Monsters University snack ideas would be great for after school pick-me-ups, party snacks, or of course for Monsters U viewing sessions. Have you seen the movie yet? Any favorite Monsters University characters?

Oh it sounds like so much fun! We don’t eat these things, but NOW I’d love to make googly eyed cookies. Surely they can be impossible gluten free?? (#wildlyoptimistic)
