A must-have all natural spring cleaning recipe! DIY carpet freshening powder that only uses two ingredients!

It’s spring cleaning time, and if there’s one area of your home that can really hold in bad odors (especially after a long winter of being indoors with kids and/or pets) it’s your carpet. Previously, I used a store-bought carpet powder to freshen things up– that is until I had an adverse reaction to the intense odor caused by the ‘fragrance’ in the powder.  After that experience, I whipped up a two-ingredient all natural DIY carpet freshening powder that makes the entire house smell amazing while zapping the unseen little odor-causers. Couldn’t be easier to make and use!

Ingredients:

1 cup baking soda

25 drops essential oil

(note: you can also add in 1 cup of borax but I prefer to make it as natural as possible so I skip that ingredient)

Directions:

Mix. When ready to use, sprinkle over carpet. Let sit on carpet, then vacuum up when ready.

As always, I only recommend Young Living essential oils because of their purity. The scents you use depend on your needs. If we’ve been sick, I like to use Thieves because of its powerful ingredients.

Seasonal issues are helped by a combo of lemon, lavender, and peppermint (plus, it smells glorious). Want your home to smell fresh and sunny? Go for the inexpensive Citrus Fresh blend or any of the citruses– lemon, orange, grapefruit, lime. All are cost effective and smell amazing.

I store my mixture in a glass jar to keep the scent of the oil in until needed, but a glass shaker lid jar is also a great storage container. Here’s a set of two— keep one upstairs and the other downstairs for easy access.

Now excuse me while I continue my spring cleaning spree, the house is finally smelling like spring again!
