My honeycomb obsession goes wayyyyyy back. I’m not sure why I love them, I think it has something to do with bees. But then why do I love bees? Since Freud isn’t on call to figure this one out, let’s just say when I started spotting wooden hexagon wall shelves all over the interwebs I knew I needed to make my own. There were many styles to oogle, such as these shelves from Dot & Bo:
or this modern set I spotted from Handmade Riot :
Since I’m seriously lacking in spare time, I knew I couldn’t whip out my miter saw and make my own wooden set. I needed something faster and cheaper. Think… think, think, think…. ah ha! Paper mache hexagon boxes would make a great base.
I ordered a set of five 7″ boxes from a craft warehouse (here’s an affiliate link for a similar version on Amazon) and spray painted them gold. Obviously this happened way back in the fall when I could actually do things outside. Not that I’m bitter. But let’s just say it’s been a long time since I was able to wield a can of spray paint.
After letting them dry, I played with a pattern until I found an arrangement I loved. Using a level, I made sure each box was straight and then used two screws through the back to attach to the wall.
Of course, that left ugly screws sticking out so I covered the back with textured gold scrapbook paper using double sided adhesive photo corners.
DONE! So easy.
When I was young, I adored miniatures (and I’ll admit, still kinda love them). Having a spot to arrange a few precious mementos adds character to our home, so I loaded them up with treasured objects:
turquoise votive from last year’s Philadelphia Flower Show and a handmade octopus pottery dish from The Outer Banks
brass pig from Nesting on Main
antler ornament from…. Kohl’s
and a few other trinkets along the way
Here’s the side view of our awkward living room; it’s a long room with doors on three walls and a fireplace on the other. Difficult to arrange for sure, but we’ve adapted to what’s best for our family and not necessarily what looks good in photos. 😉
We’ve had the honeycomb shelves up for awhile now, and I love how they define this little corner as part of our drop zone.
Note that I placed them higher than what may typically be visually pleasant. That was a calculated move in our family friendly home. Otherwise none of these objects might survive the curiosity of a 3-year-old boy.
Can you spot said 3-year-old boy in the outtake below?
These little honeycombs make me happy. Considering one wooden hexagon box costs about $45 each, making my own set in under an hour for way less than that makes me even happier.
Do you love hexagons too? And sweet little trinkets? Because if you do then we’re SO gonna be BFFs.

What an amazing & simple idea! Do you mind sharing where you got the scrapbook paper (brand)???
Can’t wait to discover all your diy’s ☺️

Hi Holly! I’m not sure of the brand but I got it at Michaels Craft Stores in the scrapbooking section. Hope that helps!

Hi, love the idea for these shelves! DO you have any idea how much weight the boxes can take? have you noticed the bottoms sagging under the weight of any of it?
Carrie Higgins says
Hi Emma! I’m not sure how much weight they can take but it’s probably equal to the size of whatever you can fit in there. I have a brass pig and a few other heavier objects and after a year there’s still no sagging. Hope that helps!

Hi! What kind of spray paint did you use and how many coats did you spray? I just ordered the boxes and can’t decide what brand of spray paint to buy!
Carrie Higgins says
I used Rustoleum spray paint and I did several light layers. I LOVE Rustoleum; it consistently works the best for me. Hope that helps, let me know how it goes!

Do you think these are sturdy enough to hold toilet paper? Kinda like the cloud that holds TP?
